About Trap Shooting

What is Trapshooting?
Trapshooting is one of the three major disciplines of competitive clay pigeon shooting, where shooters aim at clay targets launched from a single "house" or machine, typically away from the shooter. It differs from skeet shooting, which uses two "houses" with intersecting paths.
  • Firearms Used:
    • Most commonly shot with a 12-gauge shotgun.
    • Smaller gauges (e.g., 20 gauge) can be used, but no allowances are made for their use.

Trapshooting Basics
  • Target Presentations:
    • Single or double targets may be launched simultaneously.
  • Shotgun Features:
    • Adjustable stocks with options like "Monte Carlo" configurations.
    • Longer barrels (30-34 inches) with tighter chokes for longer-distance shooting.
    • Interchangeable choke tubes are common.
  • Accessories:
    • Vests or pouches to hold 25-50 shells.
    • Eye and ear protection (required at most ranges, including Rostraver SCA).

Trapshooting Procedure
  1. Starting the Squad:
    • The leader checks readiness by asking, “Squad ready?” and “Scorer ready?”
    • One free target is shown, with the leader traditionally saying, “Let’s see one.”
  2. Shooting Process:
    • Each shooter fires five rounds from each position.
    • Scorer calls missed targets (e.g., "lost").
    • Squad rotates to the next position after every five rounds.
  3. Target Calls:
    • Standard call is “pull,” but variations are allowed to help focus.
